14/10/10 Essex-based six piece Kings Cross intend to perform at Ben Nevis this weekend with a full electric PA, as part of their Extreme World Tour. They’re also planning to perform the UK’s highest drum and guitar solos while there. No strangers to controversy, the band hope this will be the first of many unusual locations on the aforementioned Extreme World Tour, which - if it goes ahead - will take in "the hottest and coldest inhabited areas in the world, the largest monolith in the world and the most remote island in the world, alongside other unlikely places for gigs like the South Pole." This weekend's endeavour is in aid of charity - with Parkinson's UK and The J’s Hospice set to benefit from funds raised.

Wondering what this has to do with Essex? Bubblegum Slut started off life in our county! Since it was established in September 2000, by then teenage editor Alison B, Bubblegum Slut has provided a quarterly posting from the glam, sleaze, goth, punk and psychobilly undergrounds. Though still distinguished, as it was on day one, by the trademark fake-fur heart and bawdy lowbrow art which adorn the cover of each issue, the zine has come a long way from its beginnings as after-school project offering the editor underage entry to gigs across the country.
30/05/10 As part of Southend Fringe Festival 2010, Noisy! presents a screening of DIY American film A Hundred Dollars and a T-Shirt: A Documentary About Zines in the Northwest US directed by Microcosm publishing’s Joe Biel. With a focus on the fanzine community in the USA and particularly the city of Portland, Oregon, the film aims to answer questions including what is a zine, why people make them and what the future holds for zines, through interviews with writers and visits to shops, symposiums, resource centres and libraries. With a running time of around 80 mins, this film will open your eyes to a cultural phenomenon that may just inspire you to create your own zine!
